Title:Online Advising Specialist

The California State University, Dominguez Hills Foundation ("Foundation") was incorporated in 1968 as a partner of the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) to provide services and develop and enhance programs that are an integral part of the University's educational mission. CSUDH is a highly diverse metropolitan university primarily serving the South Bay are of Los Angeles County. Established in 1960, CSUDH is one of the 23-campus that comprise the California State University system.

Under the general supervision of the Director of the UAC, the incumbent provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate student population by utilizing an advanced, developmental, problem solving approach, rather than a prescriptive application, to support students in retention, closing the achievement gap and degree completion. Provides support in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intrusive, comprehensive academic advising programs and interventions for students in distance learning, hybrid, and traditional programs such as Nursing, Applied Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, as well as new and emerging programs among others. Creates and maintains online materials and publications to advise students, faculty and staff advisors and departments on the General Education requirements and other related academic policies and requirements for graduation. Develops, coordinates and leads orientation, transition and success programs online for distance learning, hybrid, and traditional students. Utilizes a university-wide perspective to troubleshoot and forecast implications of potential policy changes in academic and/or graduation requirements to support retention initiatives, close the achievement gap and increase optimal time to degree completion. Coordinates distance learning, hybrid, and traditional advising services at the university level. May advise students in-person as well.


Forty-Percent (40%)
  • Works in support of and under the direction of the Director of the University Advisement Center:
  • Interprets GE requirements, EO, 1100, 1037, 1038, 1039, and other graduation requirements.
  • Provides academic advice on an individual and group basis, both electronically and in-person to incoming and continuing undergraduate students.
  • Makes decisions in individual cases to resolve problems where guidelines and precedence do not exist to optimize time to degree completion.
  • Interfaces with other relevant campus offices to support students across the campus (e.g. Graduation Unit, EOP, ETE, Veterans Resources, Student Disability Resource Center, International Education, Academic Colleges, etc.)
  • Consults with Admissions and Records staff regarding graduation requirements, current policies/procedures.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the online and hybrid advisement programs.
Forty Percent (40%)
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Director of the UAC and the Senior Advising Coordinator, assists with the development and delivery of online and hybrid orientation, transition, and success programs such as New Student Orientation, STEPS (Strategies Towards Educational Progress and Success), FAST (Freshman Advising for Successful Toros) and other advising services for freshmen and transfer students.
  • Develops online and hybrid content for orientation, transition, and success programs which include an overview of General Education requirements, two-and four-year graduation plans, university policies (e.g. add/drop procedures, remediation requirements), and relevant resources available to students.
  • Provides engaging, relevant and meaningful individual or group student advisement during NSO via distance learning hybrid and traditional delivery.
  • Measures Student Advising Learning Outcomes (SALO) before, during and after online and hybrid orientation, transition and success programs to ensure students have a working knowledge and proficiency of their academic, personal and professional plans.
  • Interfaces with academic colleges and special populations as well as other campus offices and services such as Admission and Records, Outreach, EOP, and ETE.
Fifteen Percent (15%)
  • Assists the Director in developing and maintaining web-based and written training materials for academic advisement purposes across campus.
  • Writes, revises, and updates online advisor resources to reflect changing requirements and/or policies.
  • Maintains advising website content to ensure accuracy.
  • Develops, revises, and edits advising materials and other publications (e.g. view sheets, information guides, fact sheets) for use in advising students as well as training faculty/staff advisors and academic departments on General Education requirements and other related graduation requirements.
Five Percent (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Preferred Education: Masters Degree

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for position with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Preferred Experience: Strong computer skills, effective use of social media and experience with distance advising is preferred.

Skills: The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional Series are required for an appointment into this classification.

Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques, general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilized while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily for any position that the CSUDH Foundation deems sensitive. Sensitive positions are those requiring heightened scrutiny of individuals holding the position based on potential for harm to children, concerns for the safety and security of people, animals, or property, or heightened risk of financial loss to the CSUDH Foundation or individuals in the university community. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current employees.

All employment with California State University, Dominguez Hills Foundation is at-will and shall continue only upon the mutual consent of the Foundation and the employee. This means that an employee may terminate his or her employment with the Foundation at any time with or without cause or prior notice and the Foundation may terminate an employee's employment at any time with or without cause or prior notice.

Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
