On-Call Journeyman Electrician

Will work as the only staff electrician onsite to perform skilled electrical work at the KQED facility as needed.  Duties include installing light fixtures, repairing lamps, replacing bulbs and ballasts, replacing light fixtures, switches and outlets, and other minor electrical work.


  • California State Certified General Electrician Card or equivalent experience
  • Must have completed a 4 years Electrician apprenticeship program that is certified by State of California or equivalent.
  • Must have minimum of 5 years’ experience as a maintenance or construction electrician with at least two years working in commercial facilities.

Ability to:

  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical equipment and wiring systems.
  • Climb and work from ladders and scissor lifts.
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Read and follow blueprints and wiring diagrams
  • Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Keep accurate work records.
  • Train and lead utility crew as needed for larger jobs
  • Repair low voltage electrical equipment
  • Successfully and safely connect and disconnect power without disrupting operations
  • Work cooperatively with others.

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, tools and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Basic provisions of the Uniform Building Code as it relates to the electrical trade;
  • Provisions of the National Electrical Code; State Electrical Safety Orders pertaining to electrical installations;
  • Methods of fire stop caulking; and Safety procedures pertaining to electrical installations
  • Ability to install low voltage network wiring a plus. 
  • Must be willing to join NABET Local 51 (National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, CWA, AFL –CIO, Local 51.)
  • One-time initiation fee is 8% of annual gross income and ongoing dues are 2.25% of total earnings.
  • Ability to pass criminal history check
  • Valid California Driver’s License

Compensation and Benefits:

Pay is based on union scale, depending on experience. (Starting at ~$50 per hour)
Four hour daily minimum call
