Behavioral Sciences Instructor
UC San Diego Extension’s Behavioral Sciences Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of Behavioral Sciences, particularly in the fields of counseling and therapy. The Behavioral Sciences is a broad but growing field. Currently, UC San Diego Extension has programs in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling and Play Therapy, among others. We are seeking instructors in the aforementioned areas, but also instructors who will help expand our portfolio to other areas and modalities, such as Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, Addiction Science, Socio-Emotional Learning or Cannabis Science.
We welcome suggestions by applicants who have extensive background in the field or topics that they recommend. Further, UC San Diego Extension is seeking instructors to teach continuing education programming for those licensed individuals who need to ensure their knowledge, skills, and continuing education units are up-to-date.
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in behavioral science related topics. Duties include in-class and online instruction to participants who are currently working in healthcare positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners. Additional duties include:
- Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
- Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
- Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork.
Applicants should have at least 10 years’ experience in the behavioral or cognitive sciences fields and a Master’s or higher degree in a related field. Instructors should also be a licensed therapist or licensed healthcare provider (LCSW, MFT, MD, PhD, RN, etc) if teaching continuing education courses to other licensed therapists or healthcare professionals. In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience. It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery. Proficiency in current instructional technologies is required.
Special Conditions of Employment
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
Please include a resume and cover letter outlining your interest, background, and experience related to teaching behavioral sciences topics.
Please complete all relevant fields in the application, and optionally attach additional documents to provide further information relating to your professional and teaching backgrounds. You must answer all of the questions in the application, when applicable. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of your application.
Please note: We receive and review applications for instructors on an ongoing basis. If we do not currently have teaching opportunities available, we may keep your application on file and contact you if an opportunity that matches your specific skills becomes available. UC San Diego Extension operates on a quarterly schedule and course planning typically takes place six weeks to six months in advance of the start of any quarter.
UC San Diego is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values a diverse workforce.
